This is done on the serum of patient.
Serum is stable for 24 hours at Room temp. and 28 days at 4C.
This enzyme is distributed in all tissues but primarily found in the liver, heart and skeletal muscles and RBCS.
Minimal activity occurs in skin, kidneys, and pancreas.

Newborn ; 25-75 U/L
Infants : 15-60 U/L
Adult : 8-20 U/L
SGOT > 450 U/L in blunt abdominal injury is indicator of liver injury.
Increased in
1.Fulminant type of hepatitis especialy viral type.
2.In liver cell necrosis or injury like chronic hepatitis,
drug induced injury.
1.Alcoholic hepatitis.
2.liver metastasis and Hepotome.
3.In necrosis of heart muscle or skeletal muscle e.g acute MI.
4.Severe exercise .
5.severe burn.
6.Hypothyroidism ( in 40 to 90% of cases).
7.In cholestatic and obstructive jaundice.
